California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), like other poppy varieties, contains the compounds sanguinarine, protopine and a complex mixture of synergistic isoquinoline alkaloids. In non-chemistry terms this means that this beautiful, resilient herb is worked with as an antispasmodic relaxant nervine, analgesic, and sedative. It is considered to be particularly supportive for anxiety and insomnia.

If one is feeling strung out and on edge, poppy is a friend to reach for. If one is struggling to find restorative sleep because of life demands, stress, the capitalist grind, juggling a million responsibilitiesΒ  – poppy can be a source of comfort here too. Suggested Practice: one dropperful up to 3-4 times daily mixed with a little water or juice. If working with California Poppy for sleep, take a dose every hour in the three hours leading up to your usual bedtime. Β Start on the lower end of the spectrum and see how it feels in your body.
